Master of Science In Chemistry

A chemist’s impact extends far beyond the lab. With an advanced degree in chemistry, you’ll be a problem-solver. You’ll make a meaningful impact on people and places around the world by revolutionizing drug discovery, studying green chemistry, or influencing materials design.

Prepare for a career in research, industry, or education

The University of New Haven’s M.S. in Chemistry is a practiced-based program that will enable you to take an integrative approach to solving practical chemistry problems and prepare you to pursue a career in a variety of fields.

You’ll begin by gaining a broad background in chemical theories, computational chemistry methods, analysis of experimental data, design of chemical materials, modern organic chemistry, design of molecular drugs, the design of sustainable chemical processes, and current challenges in the field of chemistry.

In addition to developing an expertise in organic, analytical, and computational chemistry, you’ll take courses in biomedical engineering, civil engineering, computer science, math, and cellular and molecular biology.

Through this integrative approach, you will be well prepared to study chemistry challenges such as molecular drug discovery, polymer materials design, catalyst design, and chemical analysis for sustainable and renewable energy.

You’ll also have the option to pursue a concentration in several rapidly growing specialty areas in the field, such as computational and materials chemistry, drug discovery chemistry, or analytical and green chemistry.

Through this program, you will also:
  • Enhance your skills and knowledge in research methods, writing, and ethics
  • Pursue a concentration in analytical & green chemistry, computation & materials chemistry, or drug discovery chemistry
  • Focus your studies through your choice of electives, including topics in pharmacology, bioinformatics, programming, and air pollution
  • Participate in seminars that will expose you to state-of-the-art chemistry research
  • Complete a research project, thesis, or internship
  • Gain the skills and knowledge to collaborate in multidisciplinary research projects in the fields of biology, biomedical engineering, environmental engineering, mathematics, and computer science
  • Be prepared to pursue a wide variety of careers in chemical, energy, pharmaceutical, materials, biomedical, or computational data analysis settings; or to pursue government or academic research

The chemistry program is jointly administered by the College of Arts and Sciences and the Tagliatela College of Engineering.

Selected Courses and Programs
  • This course provides students with the basic principles and methods in computational chemistry. Students will learn the chemical theories, molecular building methods, and basic software for simulating molecules and chemical systems for the applications in chemistry, biology, and materials science. In particular, the chemical theories include quantum mechanics, semi-empirical methods, Hartree-Fock, Post Hartree-Fock methods, and density functional theory, and solvation methods, molecular mechanics, and force field molecular dynamics.

  • This course discusses advanced topics in chromatography and separation science, an important advanced subject in analytical chemistry. Covered topics include, but are not limited to, theory of major types of chromatographic techniques, theory of mass spectrometry and hyphenated techniques, sample preparation and data collection, and applications of chromatographic separation techniques.

  • This course covers the fundamental principles of contaminant behavior in the environment. Contaminant physical-chemical properties, transport, and transformation mechanisms affecting contaminant distribution among air, water, and solid domains are studied in-depth. Topics covered include, but are not limited to, environmental interface equilibria, advective and diffusional transport; biochemical exchange in atmospheric, aquatic, and terrestrial domains. Environmental modeling is also considered.

  • Students will learn how computers and information technology are applied to manage and analyze the vast quantities of data now being collected by researchers and clinicians. Using a combination of theory and hands-on practice, the course will cover biological databases, analysis of nucleotide and protein sequences, sequence polymorphisms, sequence alignment, analysis of DNA microarray data and intermolecular interactions. An introduction to web page development, relational database design and Perl programming will also be covered.

  • Pharmacology is the study of therapeutics, agents administered to achieve a beneficial therapeutic effect on some disease process. This survey course will cover a general overview of pharmacology including principles of pharmacodynamics (mechanism of action of drugs) and pharmacokinetics (the role of drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion in drug action). The general concepts will be applied to case studies of specific drugs taken from the main classes of therapeutic agents.
