Research conducted as an undergraduate established the foundation needed to pursue a Ph.D.
Chemistry is considered the "central science" because it connects the physical sciences with the life sciences and applied sciences. Our lives revolve around it. Chemistry is involved in everything we do, from growing and cooking food to cleaning our homes and bodies to launching a space shuttle.
As a chemistry major at the University of New Haven, you’ll study this powerful science in depth. The program is uniquely flexible, allowing you to concentrate, minor, or double major in related fields. You’ll create your own path — and be closely guided by our expert faculty along the way.
Our faculty are leaders and innovators in their fields, bringing both deep professional experience and academic rigor to the classroom.

All phases of the plastics and polymers field, including the chemistry involved, methods of production, physical properties, and the uses of specific polymers.
A course to bridge the gap from the academic to the industrial world. Topics include material accounting, energy accounting, chemical transport, reactor design, process development and control.
Medicinal chemistry is the investigation, discovery, and development of therapeutic agents. A key concept is the understanding of the relationship between chemical structure and drug activity. This course is interdisciplinary in its approach, with the goals of understanding drug action and designing new drugs. Medicinal chemistry incorporates knowledge of a wide scope of disciplines such as chemistry, biology, and pharmacology. This course emphasizes the fundamental principles of medicinal chemistry and surveys major classes of drugs.
Pharmacology is the study of therapeutics: agents administered to achieve a beneficial therapeutic effect on some disease process. This survey course will cover a general overview of pharmacology including principles of pharmacodynamics (mechanism of action of drugs) and pharmacokinetics (the role of drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion in drug action). The general concepts will be applied into case studies of specific drugs taken from the main classes of therapeutic agents.

Thanks to a collaboration between the University and an innovative spectroscopy company, Nathan Seifert, Ph.D., and his students beta tested a new microwave spectrometer that isn’t yet on the market. The experience gave them a glimpse into what’s on the horizon in the field of physical chemistry as they played a critical role in the development of a state-of-the-art instrument.
Whether you're still in high school or are transferring from another college, we offer full- and part-time opportunities for undergraduates from inside the U.S. and abroad. The admission process can begin as early as the end of your high school junior year.
The Application Process
We offer a comprehensive financial aid program, with students receiving assistance in the form of grants, scholarships, student loans, and part-time employment.
