  • Suspect in car thefts on 09/16/2024 from the area near the Sheffield C-Store and potentially the Westside gate, it is unknown if this person is still on or nearby campus. If you see this person, contact the University of New Haven Police Department at 203-932-7014, or use the LiveSafe app. Please lock your vehicles at all times and hide any potential valuables from sight.

  • A student reported a person with a gun getting off a State of Connecticut bus near the Subway building across from the main entrance of the University. The person in question did not enter campus and was found almost immediately thereafter on Campbell Avenue by West Haven police. The gun as described was found to be a glass liquor bottle shaped like a firearm. There is no danger to our Campus Community, we appreciate the student for their report to keep our students, faculty, and staff safe.

  • The vehicle shown is involved in catalytic converter thefts in our area. The vehicle occupants stole a catalytic converter from an employee’s car on 01/25/23 at about 11:15 a.m. in the area of 114 Boston Post Road. The license plate, 404-FDJ is reported as stolen.

    Do not approach the vehicle if seen, if you see this vehicle or other suspicious activity, please contact UNHPD at 203-932-7014 or via LiveSafe.

  • People in the vehicle shown stole items from a vehicle parked in The Atwood parking lot at around 5:07 p.m. on Wednesday, 12/07/2022. Three males were in the vehicle; they broke a window of a car to gain access. The vehicle shown has Connecticut plate BA 69744 and the car is stolen from New Haven.

  • The vehicle shown stole a catalytic converter from a vehicle parked in the Celentano Hall parking lot at around 1:08 p.m. on 11/01/2022. Two males were in the vehicle, which was described as having heavy window tint, bondoon the right side of the vehicle, and squeaky brakes.

Safety & Crime Prevention Tips

TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS!
If you THINK there is something wrong, there is probably something wrong.

DO NOT PROP DOORS OPEN!
This compromises the security of the entire building.

LOCK YOUR DOOR, AND PROTECT YOUR KEY!
Even when leaving for only a few minutes, lock your door, and take your key. Never hide or lend keys. Always lock your door when you or your roommates are sleeping. Do not attach your ID card to your keys.

DO NOT ALLOW STRANGERS INTO YOUR ROOM!
Find out who is at your door before you open it. University of New Haven employees carry identification -- don't be afraid to ask for it. Beware of solicitors! They are not allowed in residence halls and should be immediately reported to the University of New Haven Police Department at 203-932-7070.

AVOID RISKY BEHAVIOR!
Remember that alcohol impairs your judgment. THINK before you drink, and consider the risks BEFORE you act. The decisions you make NOW can have a significant impact on your safety and on your future.

BE ALERT TO WHAT IS GOING ON AROUND YOU!
Be aware of your surroundings, and walk confidently and with determination. Avoid shortcuts in isolated areas, and walk in groups at night.

BE AWARE OF YOUR RIGHTS IN SOCIAL AND SEXUAL SITUATIONS!
Be willing to say No! if a situation becomes uncomfortable. NO MEANS NO! Unwanted physical contact is a crime! Report it immediately to the University of New Haven Police Department (203-932-7070) or to a member of the Residential Life staff.

PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY:

  • Be sure homeowner's insurance covers your property while at the University of New Haven.
  • Record serial numbers of valuable items.
  • Put an identifying number near the binding of the same page in all of your books.
  • Keep wallets, purses, checkbooks, jewelry out of sight and locked away, if possible.
  • Do not keep large sums of cash. Use the on-campus ATM or a checking account.
  • Keep track of credit cards, and report their loss immediately.
